  • Growing Tomato Ildi on the balcony

    Hello Everyone,

I was wondering whether anyone has had any experience with growing the tomato variety "Ildi" on a balcony? I know it has long trusses and so was trying to figure out the best container and setup to use, in order to maximise space and keep the plant happy!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Haven't grown it myself, but it is a cordon variety so it will need support. I grow my tomatoes in large deep pots and support with a bamboo cane to each pot.

I grew it once years ago and it was OK as I remember but it was a single plant given to me and I didn't like it enough to bother saving seed. Back then I grew all my toms in the greenhouse so guess it was in a pot with a cane to support. Sorry can't be of any more help.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm trying it for the first time this year and I'm finding it slow growing compared to the other varieties. At the moment they are on average 8" high and are about to be potted on from 5" diameter pots to deep (Long Tom) pots that are about 7/8" diameter. Depending on how big they grow from there, I'll move them into black flower buckets as their final destination, supported by a cane.
