I bought some capillary matting. I had read somewhere that it has plastic on one side with holes in for the water to come through to prevent mildew. Therefore I put the matting plastic side up. I have very sad, dry little plants. I've put the matting in upside down, haven't I...? Where's the slightly red-faced embarrased smilie?

Capillary matting - a daft question...

If you are using capillary matting the surface needs to be level or the water will run to the lowest point. Another thing is that all the pots need to be the same size or the larger ones will rob the smaller ones of water.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. I'm using mine plastic up - its perforated so it works.
Have you watered it enough? it dries out quickly and takes a while to get properly damp for use.
Mind you up until now I've always used water matting. I just got mean about the cost of it this year but I might go back to the other stuff next year and look after it a bit better to make it last. It just holds so much more water.
