  • Back to potatoes.

I been out in garden and I've found 2 bags that had spuds in last year.
I thought I'd emptied them but they still have spuds in and they are growing well.
The shoots are out the top of bag already.

Can I keep and use these potatoes bearing in mind the bags have been out in the rain and cold since this time last year?

I would have thought so, after all if they had been in the ground they would have been usable volunteers. The only problem is lack of nutrients I would think. Give 'em a feed.

Don't matter whether volunteers are in the ground or in a container they are still viable. A good dose of high nitrogen as soon as. Then top dress with NPK neutral fertiliser. Finally high potash when the tubers start to form.

I've got some potato fertiliser, would that do?

Yep CS that would be a good start as a top dressing. But the growing medium is going to be very bland as the last crop will have taken all the neutrients so I would look to giving them a good dose of nitrogen for green growth and then potash to swell the tubers.
