What have I done to my poor cucumbers?

As per title...





I have another cucumber that was sown a few weeks later and I don't want the same to happen to it as it's my last.

Forgot to add that they are in my greenhouse and were watered to keep the soil moist.

too wet and too cold by the look of it. In the case of the seond one, not enough stuff to grow in.

Too wet and cold as Taff says. Keep them indoors on a windowsill for now.

Not meaning to sound patronising but as you are growing in cups, do they have drainage holes in the bottom. Still time to sow more if needed.

Keep them the dry side of damp. Only water from the bottom by standing them in a shallow amount of water for a minute or two. Dont let the soil/compost around the stem get wet or it can rot.

One of my cukes committed suicide a while back and even that was only ever watered from the bottom. They're one of the few plants I'm strict about that with cos they're so prone to stem rot. It does look like that's what's happened here. I would also bring them inside on cold nights. They're wussies with the cold.

I agree, too cold is almost certainly the problem. Even indoors on a windowsill can get too cold overnight, if it's below 0c outside. Cucs are very temperamental until they're a good sized plant really. I've never had a problem with stem rot in a cucumber that was kept warm enough though, and I repot them with the stems buried up to the seed leaves.

No consolation but my 15cm cucs bit the dust this weekend in a 20degree heated GH. When I uprooted them, very poor root formation despite being in a large enough pot. Try to recover them in water but I have planted more seeds as a backup. I think they were started too early and are suffering from cold and lack of light.P

struggling with my cucumbers too....one bit the dust at the weekend and the other 3 are limping (literally) on. I've sown some more yesterday as a back up.

Thank you for the replies, my bad by watering them from the top. I shall try to salvage them but will buy more seeds as a back up.

Bigmally I'm a little relieved it's not just me then.

flowertot I shall be doing the same as I really want cucumbers to go with the rest of my home grown salad (which is doing alright so far, thank god).

Mine all popped their clogs last week, and I'd been really diligent with them. It's just too cold, even inside on a sill. and the light quality is bad.

Reckon I'll be buying cukes this year!

If the worst comes to the worst, you can always pick some plants up from the GC, but like Potty says, there's time to sow more anyway

I think that I'll be sowing some more too. Out of four that I sowed far too early (well I just got carried away) I have two that are hanging on but I don't hold out much hope.

The leaves went floppy first, not the stems, so perhaps it was the cold. Two were chopped off and given the 'Pots' stick'em in water' treatment and the one that survived has been potted up. It still looks very sick though. The one that had hung on in it's original pot looked like a stem with a tiny leaf at the top, so it's been chopped and is in water.

A very steep learning curve for me this cucumber malarky....
