When trying to save a plant do not be rushed, give it chance to form a good root system before potting up.

The pic shows the minimum of root there should be. If you pot on to quickly the plant will not be strong enough to stand the change from water to compost.

Bethduckie, it's a lesson for me. I will definately be leaving it a bit later next year just in case.

Colin my biggest fear is buying more seeds because I can't just go to the garden centre for seeds can I? lol

Sarzwix, I feel that buying plants is cheating. I would never say never though.

Singleseeder, I don't suppose we anticipated this cold weather staying so long. It really is taking the pee eye double ess now, where is summer?

Nah, tisn't cheating, I buy odd plants here and there - there's always something I've forgotten to sow, or that the slugs have dined on. There's nothing like the satisfaction of growing from seed, but no shame in buying plants as well. You still save money in the long run (£1.50 for a cucumber plant, or £1.00 for 1 cucumber?!).

Actually that is a good point, I don't like parting with my pennies at the best of times so going off your analogy I shall weigh up buying a ready made cucumber plant against cucumber seeds when I'm at the garden centre.

Sarz, £1.50? That sounds more than reasonable. Where would you get one for so little?
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

EEEEEks me thinks that is a bit steep £1.50 for a cucumber plant, not far from where i live we have a nursery and he is selling very healthy cucumber plants for £1.00 was tempted but have enough already grown from seed. I also got 20 5 litre pots for £8 so going for more today, and my OH got some flooffers 15 1litre pots of fuschias, surfinia and something else for £11.
Have to say i dont normaly experience to many problems with cucmbers, not that i'm an expert far from it think it's more good luck than judgement.

My local garden centre sells plants grown by Gardener's Kitchen for £1.50 each, or 4 for a fiver, B&Q will probably have them at some point as well

It seems that I owe apologies here. B&Q did have cucumber plants for £1.49, about a dozen of them, everyone as sick as the one I'm trying to replace. Not heard of the variety before ...... Styx.... perhaps that was more an adjective than a variety though

How many plants does the horticultural (hmm!) staff have to kill before they are moved somewhere else? There must have been well over 500 plants/strips of veggies that were nigh on dead, without mentioning a truck with a whole pile of the polystyrene modules that had had decent sized toms in, no sign of them now, just compost.

Bought a packet of Telegraph seeds. Will start them off tonight and see what happens.

I just threw them in pots and left them outside and ignored them. 100% success rate ;-) *Boasts*

                    Yeah, yeah, I know - location :-(

Funny enough the ones I sowed earlier on in the year are to OK for me...very healthy
more recently sown ones struggling with the recent cold spell
