I just couldn't resist buying a couple of bags with a name like that, they were only 49p per bag. I have just found out that shop bought B.Shallots can only be grown for seed & they do not split. Does anyone know why or have you had them split. I just want to know whether to plant them or eat them. Thanks in advance.

If you're feeling adventurous, try this recipe Beef Stifado recipe - Recipes - BBC Good Food
Its good for using lots of small onions, doesn't take too long to prepare although a few hours to cook as it has to be done slowly, but its excellent reheated.
I used to make it with octopus but that may be a step too far!

I bought some from Lidl too but didn't get around to planting them, now noshed. I did have a packet of seeds though so they are now about two and a half inches high. I've not grown any onions from seed before apart from spring onions, so will report back.Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

My shallots are coming along nicely as long as they don't rot in all this drought we're having........I've also just planted out some shallot sets brought back from France and they look more like the banana shallots ....

Here ya go, BigM, the quick and easy way to use your shallots, I say that because I've just cooked it but without banana shallots - just an ordinary little one.
Get a couple of potatoes and bung them in the microwave to cook, in their skins. Take some of your onions, skin and slice thinly-ish. Heat up some oil in a frying pan and lob in the sliced onions and cook until transparent. While that's happening, grab a couple or three eggs and crack into a cup, beat with a fork (making sure that no shell goes in - which I failed to do).
When potatoes are cooked (? about 7-8 minutes), slice them thickly.
Add them to the frying pan with the onions and continue cooking until the potatoes brown: turn them over and cook other side.
When browned, pour the eggs over the potatoes and onions. keep cooking until the egg is set. Add some sliced cheese to the top if you like until it melts.
Voila, a meal cooked (and eaten) while I've been posting messages here!
