  • Overwintering onions bolting

They were looking lovely, but in the last week or so nearly every plant has shown a flower bud. Is it the weather? Anyone else had problems?

Have in the past but not this year. I thought it was to do with being too dry. Think even Lowestoft has had plenty of water. I just nip the bud off as soon as I can and hope for the best.

maybe plants got a bit stressed with mild February weather followed by cold snap. No problems up here yet but I'll be looking with trepidation every time I'm at the plot now.

Buds duly nipped off, even before I posted. Lowestoft has the reputation of being one of the driest parts of the country but it certainly hasn't lived up to that this year. I am sick and tired of bladdy rain.

Not seen anything yet, but I've not spent too log in my onion patch. It's looking a disgrace form what I've seen. Just a lot of windburn.

              Were they red onions rusty?

I've never been able to grow either autumn planted or spring planted red onion sets without them bolting. So much so, that all my red onions I grow are grown from seed.

I nipped out 5 seed stalks on Senshyu the other day and am keeping a close eye on them from now on. It's got to be the weather as the same happened last year. Cold followed by warm followed by cold again. The poor dears don't know what's going on. Come to that, neither do I

I'll take a look later on too. I've never been successful yet with onions, but I still keep trying. Bu@@er for punishment that I am. Hope yours are ok RL.

They were a Wilkinsons mixture - red, yellow and white. The red ones seem OK at the moment.

My Senshyu yellows had 2 buds today (out of 45), and one on what I think is a garlic (but may be a unintentionally overwintered volunteer red summer onion) out of about 20 garlic (if it's a garlic).

Does flowering interrupt growth or is it only a problem if they go to seed?
