  • Winter squash space

After confessing on the plantaholic thread I have just counted how many winter squash I have currently germinated (excluding the ones that still might make it)
I have 36. Now suggestions as to where I might plant them?
I've thought maybe between my currant bushes and asparagus might be a possibility? The sweetcorn is already cuddling up to broad beans (under bottle cloches), do you think I might get away with a few there too, bearing in mind the beans are in flower now so might be out before the squash get too big.
You might have realised that I haven't allocated enough space for this number of plants. I only have half a plot, with a third taken up with compost, fruit, shed and asparagus. The problem is, I only planted 2 or 3 seeds of each type but I never like only planting one of a variety in case something happens to it.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

it's winter squash .... by the time winter comes, you should have more space .... how about keeping some of them in pots until late summer??

No, they'll be dead by winter: they aren't hardy. They just store well over winter. They do there growing over the summer and are harvested early autumn before the frosts come

What varieties have you got? Could you train them "up"? The smaller varieties are happy to scramble up cane wigwams (with a bit of encouragement and tying in). I had lots of small pumpkins come up among my runner beans and they shared the bean frame quite happily.

I know, doing the maths, that I haven't got space for them all. That is why I am looking at ideas for interplanting and creating space for at least a reasonable number. Last year the squash did well, even though the corn didn't. This combination is well known though with the idea of the 3 sisters. I was wondering if anyone had other ideas where I could get another plant in, without compromising too much on yields for other crops. Intensive feeding will probably be necessary.
I will look into training them up. Maybe some netting over the compost bins that are maturing would be a possiblilty.
