Rob, try and get hold of some fleece (£1 shop sells thin stuff that can be doubled). Don't wrap the container completely though ie leave the top open. If you could put some thin canes around the edge of the container, taller than the plants and then wrap you'll have a better chance. Even newspaper will help if the night temp drops. A bit of shade won't hurt them for a while. I live in Essex too and my lettuces have been in their container , wrapped as above, for the last 4 nights and have survived. As others have said, they do tend to wilt a bit on transplanting so hopefully they will survive.
