Transplanting Leeks

I came across this today and thought it might be useful to those of you who grow leeks. Using newspaper mulch before planting to prevent weeds is a great idea.

I think you could use that idea with loads of stuff ........make sure the soil is well watered first tho'.

Lots of us are mulching with newspaper, but it needs to be weighted down with something, otherwise it will fly off in a wind

Mine is in a sodden mass in green bags waiting for a decision from the council as to whether they will charge for collection or not, even though we had to buy the bags in the first place and even though I told Himself not to tell youngest son to bag it up when he cut the grass, but to pile it up in the corner as I would use it. Sorry, that really was a rant, wrong thread.

you could also use cardboard,thats given me ideas for when mine go out,have some been down all winter in a brassica patch,it's only just started to rot away,got the exta large ones from an insustrial estate with big palletts,have to go on another hunt,

That's gives food for thought.. Thanks, I have plenty of cardboard at the moment because my wife NEVER stops internet shopping and the packaging is ALWAYS big cardboard boxes!!!

Transplanting Leeks - newspaper mulch
I wanted to share a really good tip I picked up for transplanting leeks into your plot - I did this last year and it worked really well. Before making the holes with a dibber, cover the whole area with a few layers of newspaper and water well to soak it. Then, make the holes for the leeks to drop into through the layers of paper and you'll need to do absolutely no weeding whatsoever for the whole growing season, and there is a little bit of extra protection against the soil drying out - genius!
