Looks like a really good idea to me, provided the paper can be kept under control. Should help discourage cats too. Only problem is that I planted out my leeks last weekend.Comment

Darn it! Me too - I transplanted all my leeks last weekend. However I had already used all my newspaper and clippings on my potatoes anyway. I shall remember this for next time. Plus I need to read more newspapers...
I found grass clippings alone suppressed weeds magnificently on the over-wintering onion bed - I applied it twice and it's only just disappeared (although the moss in the clippings has remained as a minimulch). Nary a weed in sight. Very impressed.Proud member of the Nutters Club.

Cardboard is a great idea, I never would have thought of it. I wonder if cardboard would help keep the cats away as much as newspaper?Comment

I'm very much more a keep the hoe going guy than a mulch to suppress weeds guy. I don't mean mulching is wrong or is less effective. No-one is wrong with what they do if it works for them.Comment
