frost tonight

Last night I covered my outdoor potatoes and fleeced my toms and runners that are in the greenhouse but luckily my GH temp only got as low as 4.6c so not as cold as they'd predicted.

Would frost damage show on runner beans and peas straight away? I removed the fleece about an hour ago and they all look ok....to be honest I have no idea what I'm meant to be looking for anyway.

your peas are frost hardy -so they dont need protecting - however your beans do and if they where hit by the frost you would know about it - they would be drooping - your beans sound fine to me. my nans beans were hit by the frost last week - but they've started to regrow from the leaf joints - so there may be some hope for you lot thats had there beans hit with the frost.

So that would be why my snow peas in the hanging baskets are not basket cases in the frost? Pleased to hear it. Pity beans are so touchy, I love them but we have early and late frosts. When they say 'sow after last expected frost............' well that can be in october or after Christmas day!

I just have to ask, are your plums still fleeced?

The last time I looked, my plums were fine.........thanks for asking. They are not fleeced, all the flowers have gone & small fruits are forming. Not sure if frost attacks the fruit or not till I check them.

I've had a look at my plums. ( NO rude comments please!!)

Mine look fine- just hoping the frost doesn't cause the baby fruit to drop off either BM.

We were forecast 4C last night.... we had -1C

Things look OK though at the moment.

I've given up paying any attention to the weather-man/woman. Several times they said "Frost tonight" only for me to waste time needlessly covering stuff up, but then I'm sure I exist in a different dimension. My spuds haven't been covered for a few weeks and they're in rude health. A woman I know, whom lives roughly 200 yards away (as the crow flies - it's 250 if walking ) suffered frostbite to her potatoes one particular night when I didn't get any frost (due to insomnia I checked at 12:30am, 3:00am and 3:30am before going back to bed). It's all very odd.

Well there hadn't been a frost here, my tatties were fine .....gh usually is a couple of degrees above outside temps anyway .
I've never fleeced my plums and never lost any to frost ........In fact apart from yourself BM I don't think I know anyone who does ......

I'm in exactly the same position, top of a south facing slope. Walked up the path a couple of saturdays ago, stomach churning looking at the all the damage around and got up to my plot and nadda, not a bit of damage. Guess the cold air flows down?? There are so many micro-climates. I can be getting whipped by wind and a few meters down the path there's not a breath because of sheds and fences creating wind breaks.

My tatties in bags at home were fine overnight so the allotment tatties are not getting covered tonight. I leave my strawberries uncovered. 2.9 in the greenhouse but I'm not fleecing in there either as last night, when that temp was recorded they were fine.
