  • Going with the Flo

Wey Hey, I have Florence Fennel (Firenze) for the first time ever. I sowed seed into modules and little plants are now about 2 inches high. Question is, do I transplant into bigger pots, or plant straight into the ground? I'm sick of feeding the snails, so I really don't want to sacrifice the fennel.

I shall be watching this with interest as I'll need to know the same myself shortly, I hope!

I'm sure I read somewhere in the June GYO that you become a "real" gardener when you grow FF successfully. I don't believe everything I read you understand

Probably won't help a lot but last year I lost none to slugs/snails but they did ALL bolt regardless of position (in relation to sunshine hours a day).I did note that potting up can be used to hold back the plants to allow some staged planting.
One plant was left in a 5" pot all season only growing to a height of 18" while those in the soil got to about 30"

I have herb fennel and this morning it was covered in great fat snails - well at least 6 of them. The fennel is 2-3' high so I reckon that your little plants don't have much chance again the snails at the mo.

I might pot them on for the time being then. I was hoping that maybe fennel was one of the few things that snails and slugs disliked.

I think that might be the safe option Flo! Shame to lose them after all your efforts.

Mmm Florence Fennel Florence, nice. I've no coffee grounds, do you think porridge oats would do? Tell you what, I sprinkled vermiculite on top of brassica seedlings sowed in modules and the slugs haven't been near them, even when the vermiculite's wet.

No slugs on herself's pansies since surrounding them with a layer of crushed eggshells

Don't Starbucks and the other coffee shop chains give their coffee grounds away for free? I'm sure I've seen bags of them in our local branch.
If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't!!

Plant out half. I've planted out mine with their first true leaves stage. Last year they were fine and few quickly once in the ground. They will bolt eventually.
