  • Grit for Potting on Peppers

What with peppers/chillis not liking being sat in wet pots, I was just wondering if anyone adds grit to their MPC when potting on to keep the soil free draining? has anyone had success with this or do you just run the risk of the pot being too dry in a hot green house?

    thanks

nope I just water them sparingly, treat them mean I was told and they respond very well. I am going to re pot slowly this year as too big a pot could lead to waterlogging and rotting roots

One of my few talents is underwatering so not a problem for me . I know some people do put grit etc in but I've never had a problem and it's another thing to phaff with that I don't need. You won't do any harm though if you want to. Obviously you have to think about the growing medium and take that into consideration when watering.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

The gradually potting on into bigger pots is definitly the way to go.

I sufferd last year by going from small to 10 litre pot straight away. I swear they didnt do any growing for well over a month

They may have been putting down roots and establishing themselves down initially, before hitting a big growth spurt up.
I've seen a few blogs on chilli forums with people planting into big pots very early and they get amazing results

No grit nor perlite here, just frugal watering

I'm with TS on this one. Never used grit, but I wait until they're shouting "water, water" until I can't listen to it any longer and give them some. The response is brilliant.

No grit, perlite or anything else in mine, just strawberry planter compost from B&Q and a low-volume (about 30ml per plant) daily watering.

Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive
