  • Cucumbers dying, help please

    Hi,
I have 2 cucumbers. They both look healthy but the small new fruit are are turning yellow, brown and then dying on the plant. There are some more advanced fruit that seems to be doing fine. I moved them from home up to the tunnel last week. They were doing fine at home. They are fairly advanced, one is 4 foot, the other one is 6 foot high. Any ideas? It's my first time with cucumbers and I read they are tempermental with watering. Does it sound like too much water? Too little? Maybe it is just transplant shock?
    Thanks a lot!

Are you feeding them on a weekly basis?

Thanks. They are due a feed, usually do all feeding on a saturday but they have been regularly fed with tom food.
Can anyone recommend how much water an average plant would take daily?
      Cheers

It's better to water when the soil they are in are looking a bit dry. I usually water my plants about every 3 days. You see, what happens when you water them every day is the roots are always getting water, meaning they don't grow to find new sources. If you let the soil dry out slightly, this forces the roots to start growing again in search of those new water sources, meaning you get a larger and stronger root network.

Thanks a lot, good advice. As a rough guide, how much water would you give them? They are in a raised bed and I flooded them well a week or so before the plants went in. Would you be talking 1 lt or 10 lt type amount? Cheers

Myself, I generally give 2 or 3 plants about 9ltr's or so every 3 days. Keeps them nice and happy so far =)
Thoughit also depends on the weather, how big your bed is, how good it's drainage is etc. More water for hotter weather, bigger beds etc.

Be careful with the watering, too much sitting around the base can cause stem rot. By any chance did you put a pop bottle/milk bottle etc dug in by the roots when you planted? it makes watering easier and prevents too much moisture buildup.

Thanks both of you. I did that with milk jugs in the other bed with my toms and peppers. I must dig a couple in for the cucumbers too. I'll give them a feed and an exact amount of water and see how it goes. Cheers
