Problems with onion sets

Hey guys, hopefully someone can give me a hand with this one.

I have put about 15 onion sets in a small plot and the shoots were coming up nicely, but when they reach a certain height, they are falling over. New stalks do come up, but the tall ones falling over gives me the impression that something is wrong here. I have been watering every day, except when it rains. The soil actually has some small rocks within it so it probably drains well. What is happening here?

Well I worried about that too. There was a number of a days here without rain and the soil became rather dry. I wasn't watering every day at that point, but that's when the problem started. I've also checked for the dreaded onion fly as well, but I can't detect any evidence of that. I guess I can try backing off on the water.

Gid a little hole between the bulbs to see if there is much moisture beneath the surface.

Do the leaves change colour at all? Eg go yellow or brown. Do the tips change colour? Is there a white dusty residue on them?

Some of the tips are going yellow and brown. In fact I had a few that I replaced that went all brown and basically died. I'm not detecting any white stuff on them.

How much sun do they get? I wonder if they're too shady, and that's making them grow weak & floppy

Midwest US. Generally corn country...haha. Right along the line of zones 5b and 6a. And no they cannot get full sun all day. They get with the sun around 2 pm and lose it a few hours later. Unfortunately it's not possible to get them in the sun all day where we're located. The days are pretty long, however.

I think that might be the problem then. *Most veggies* need full sun, and lots of it (all day, preferably). Otherwise, they tend to grow tall & thin & weak
