Well done, Bigmallly - you can see you like your veg beds neat and tidy!

I am going to show the garden club at school so they know what to aim for when they plant out the lettuce seedlings!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks for the encouraging remarks, much appreciated.
To follow on from a few points raised Yes they are Cos @ the front followed by 2 rows of Bright Lights (Well Spotted) then some Little Gems at the back. In the next cage which I didn't show, I have Iceberg..............the problem I am having is that it looks too nice to eat........

Drat, I thought that might be an issue for you BM, bearing in mind how you like things to be organised. How about taking out the numbered ones and replacing with smaller ones - so you end up with a pattern of big, small, or big, big, small, small to give a checkerboard effect.

Having visited this forum for about a year now, I'd never have guessed you're in your first year of having a plot BM. You know far too much!

Forgive my ignorance here, but only grown salad leaves before, it's also my first year with proper lettuces and I've got a nice row of Little Gem's in the polytunnel much like BM's. My question is do they eventually heart up, or do they stay loose-leaved? We've picked a couple to make a bit of space as the row isn't as nicely spaced out as BM's, ours are a bit crowded. They're very tasty as they are, but do they get a tight head eventually?

They are looking good! Was feeling a bit sad about the little islands of green in my garden atm but the rain be had o/night has brightened them up.

Nothing like your lettuce BM and Matt - but green, that counts doesnt it?

I have a photo of our first lettuce we grew down here. One of the round hearting ones. The boy is holding up this large lettuce with a Christmas hat on it! All our non gardening friends are going 'What the heckis that?' and 'Why would you?" But we were so proud of it.

So BM and Matt - Congratulations and many happy returns of the day

They look fab, BM. And don't worry, the chuffed to bits feeling never wears off....

I have a lovely row of Winter Density that I am munching my way through, and some Rosetta that are begining to come on. Little Gems suffering from the lack of rain, but may plant some more today!

I had friends staying, and insisted on picking the evening's lettuce first thing in the morning while they were at their most turgid - my friend couldn't believe this wasn't a norty word! She now uses it in every sentence, if she can.

We never grow up do we! So, chuffed to bits you should be....

They look great BM and I thought you might have a problem harvesting them and spoiling the pattern!

Bet you've got some succession sewings to go in though.

Iv'e got some little gems to go in on my lottie but it's rain all day today so I thought I might try some in a trough in the garden where I can control the rain fall to a certain extent.
