  • So what do I do with celery?!

    Hello,
A kind chap gave me a load of celery seedlings the other day via freecycle. I have stuck them into pots...but havnt got a clue what to do with them! He got the seeds from someone else and they all germinated (hence the sharing) so he doesnt know if they are self blanching or originals..... any thoughts on what I should do with them? I have around 50 and they are growing rather quickly! They have about 4 -6 leaves each now so I need to do something asap!!
    Thank you!

Well, if you don't know which type then I would plant them out and wrap cardboard round them anyway. Also give them lots of water and food .......I wait till they are about 12" tall before I wrap them. Kitchen roll middles are useful . I cut down one side and use two to a plant , and loosely tie string round.

Oh I would love to have your problem! You can juice it and add to other juices. You can make cream of celery soup. You can make waldorf salad with apples, walnuts and celery. You can put cream cheese in the celery hollows and just eat it. You can use it to scrape up any dip you like with. You'd have to fight two of my teenagers to get any though as they love the stuff.

...and when they're grown you apparently throw them at the Chelsea football team.
Can't imagine what else they'd be good for, yeuch!

          Thank you Binley,
How far apart should I plant each one and how deep? Some things I read say put them in trenches, and others - wrap things around them. Thank you!

Hahaha - celery is like marmite I think! I love it, my husband hates it! ...mmmmm... celery and marmite might be a good combo!

A trench is useful then you can flood it twice a week (if the weather doesn't do it for you ) . I made a wide trench with compost buried in it but left it about 3" below soil level . Cardboard makes earthing up easier so you don't get soil in the crowns. Plant them at the level they are growing in the pots.

They are an essential in stews and bolonaises along with onion and carrot.
Don't eat it raw if I can help it though.
