Kelvedon wonder peas

Hi all,

Found one of my pea plants snapped in half today. Have stuck it in water on the off chance it would re-route - anyone know if it would?

Also it had a couple of pods on the plant, but I couldn't feel any peas... Forgive my ignorance, are these produced after the pods have formed?

I dont think you pea stem will root in the water, but the plant in the ground should send out some more shoots (however this can only happen if there is some leafs left of the plant, as this is where the new shoots form).

Onto your second question - as the pods grow the peas will fill them - however once your pods look full it is best to leave them and extra couple of days so that the peas fill out a little more - and you wont realy be able to feel the peas in the pods - the only way of knowing is to open a couple of pods and this wll tell you if your peas are ready for harvesting!

If and when we get some Sun, you can lay on the ground and inspect the pods against the Sun (or a bright torchlight) to see the peas inside. Cheers, Tony.

The pods also get more rounded, instead of flat like new ones

Kelvedon wonder should give approx 6 10mm diameter peas in each pod,so picking will be 50-75mm pod length

My Kelvedon Wonder peas are 6 inches high and have started flowering... I know it's a dwarf variety, but that doesn't suggest a good harvest, does it?

6 inch high does seem on the small - they should be 3 times that high (based on thompson and morgans site), have you given them anything to climb up?

Anyway, mine were only small when they started to flower, but now they around 5ft so dont worry, and even if it is a dwarf variety it doesnt mean that your going to get a small crop from your plants

Kelvedon Wonder are a pea I grow every year. they grow anywhere up to 3ft high despite what you read in the catalogues. You can some times get two good crops in a year in fact I started chitting my second setting today.

The pici may give you some idea of what to expect, it was taken about 3 weeks ago. They have now grown to the top of the frame and I expect to have a few for Sunday lunch.

They have some short bamboo canes to go up - they're mostly small because I planted them late as I wasn't sure what to grow and didn't really realise the cool weather crop thing. That and the weather, of course.

But developing flowers when they are so small isn't going to hamper there growth though? That is what I was worried about.
