  • beetroot is non starter..

I sowed my beetroot on 19/4 and whilst it has lots of foilage and thick stems it has nothing going on down below! Im assuming that all the wet weather has caused this but do I wait and see or pull it up and sow some more??
(July has to have abit of sunshine surely??)

Depending on variety it can take much longer than that to reach maturity. I have some Boltardy sown mid March which is starting to plump up nicely now so give it a while yet. If it's growing it should eventually reach a decent size.....weather permitting.

I sowed my first lot of beetroot in March, for the first time ever I have foliage but I'm only just starting to see it swelling. Don't give up just yet.

Mine are about an inch across. They are taking longer this year but they are coming.

            How thick a stem?
You can eat that bit too I think.
One I left in last year has grown a really thick stem and is flowering (As I knew it would - dying to see how pretty beetroot flowers are)

Sowed mine in modules ages ago. Planted out about afortnight ago. they don't seem to have moved since i planted them out and are still 1/2" high!

Bought a packet of trusty bolthardy yesterday and will probably make a direct sowing today.

Fur coat and no knickers is what I would say about my beetroot so far this year!

ok, I'll hold out for the sunshine then!
(TBH Ive already snuck some more in under the brussel sprouts! Just would hate to waste any space in my teeny little plot).

                      That made me laugh

Hopefully it will develop some 'junk in the trunk' in due course.

Very poor year for beetroot. No end of failures on our lotties. Even those that germinated have not come to anything yet.

sowed mine in modules as well. Normally just so the seeds straight out but thought
i might try in modules first before planting out to the final position.
It has worked really well, i planted mine out about two months ago and they seemed to just sit there for ages not doing anything. Then all of a sudden they are now growing like mad

Lots of people at Edingley allotments are having trouble with their beetroot this Year. I have sown four times so far. My problem seems to be slugs. As soon as the beet pop their heads above ground they are eaten up. Mrs snuffer has bought me some Nemaslug as a father's day present (aren't we a romantic couple?) so tomorrow I will be unleashing 60 million nematodes on to the lottie in an attempt to eradicate the slimy slugs.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Funny enough, my beetroot is one of the things doing OK but I took a chance and sowed early so it benefitted from that nice March we had...further sowings seem slow, due to weather I suppose...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
