Planting Out

Hello,

I sowed myself a batch of French Climbing Beans, Garden Peas, Sweetcorn 7+days ago and ive pretty much had a 95-100% sow success .

My worry is with all this wind and slugs/snails when would you plant them out to give them the best fighting chance, as atm there in pots inside a nice warm and safe greenhouse?

Im going to place plastic bottle around the base of them anyway with probably egg shells and anything else i can find to deter them also.

Wind is dropping by 50% by tomorrow and half as much again on monday. Rain is also stopping and we are scheduled for 4 dry days so put your plants out now in a very sheltered spot to harden off and plant out any time from Tuesday onwards

So excited this is first time ive grown sweetcorn lol, my old man has tried it and failed so its time to try and show him up .

imo, Tuesday is too early for the hardening off to have been successful. It's not just cold temps they need to cope with, it's snail attack & wind.
It's really not worth skimping on the hardening off period (I do mine for 7-10 days)

Ok ill transplant them to a bigger pot then ill move then to a cooler place ready to harden.

Insy, if you transplant them then you really don't want to be moving them to cooler straight away. That's a double shock for your poor plants. Why do you need to pot them on into bigger pots anyway?

I was just going to tranplant them out and save o moving into bigger pots, but if i was move to to a cooler place for 7 days to harden off then they will need repotting before.

So i will transplant them to bigger pots and let them settle for 3-7 days then ill move them out to harden for another 5-7 days before transplanting.

Was trying to save room in greenhouse and compost.

But if you move them to a cooler place they won't be doing much growing so probably would manage fine without re-potting. BTW, what plants exactly are we talking about?

First time growing sweetcorn so im hoping they'll be ok transplanting them.

They'll all be fine being transplanted once, but to do it twice within a couple of weeks is challenging for the little things! They have enough to adjust to, with the changes in temperatures between the GH and the outdoors.

I dont have room for the amount that germinated anyway as i didnt expect them all to shoot, so i have extras if they don't make it.

That's what I'm doing, Insy! Planting out half, waiting to see whether they survive the weather and the slugs, if not, I can replace them from my reserves. Its like planning a battle campaign

Oh I was thinking exactly what vc just wrote. Always good to have a backup ready to go.
Woud it be worth doing it in 3 batches? One on tuesday, one in 7 days, and one if that doesn't survive or if there are gaps where they got eaten?
