Well yesterday the forecast was that today would be ok weather wise. So here I am packing my bag to get ready to go to my plot...and guess what...it's started to rain.

I'm still going though because there is always something that can be done and I need some onions for dinner. Plus I love being there. I just need the right clothes, a flask of tea, a sarnie, an apple and I'm sorted for the day.

It's better than trawling round Tesco isn't it?

My advice would be; go to a garden centre, or B&Q, or an online plug plant seller, and buy ready grown plants. I'm considerably further south than you, and I wouldn't dream of trying to sow beans or squashes direct. Cold, wet soil is not conducive to germination of those types of seeds. If you buy plug plants, you've got the most tricky bit done for you, and then all you have to do is the weeding and watering, and the eating once they're cropping. It still works out cheaper than buying the veg in the shops.
Also, as someone else suggested, invest in some horticultural fleece and some cloche hoops, it really helps plants to get established without being battered by rain and wind.

what I usually do is come home smother myself in mossie repellant and grab a glass of wine in one hand and a hose in the other. It's amazing how you can unwind and water at the same time. I also have used the nodig garden with cardboard under the hay/compost to minimise weeds.

I think if you work out which are the easiest most hardy veg to grow that you like, and only do what you can manage it will be easier for you. I love fresh veg too, but there's a limit to how much time I can spend outside in the freezing cold, the baking heat, and the wind in between.
It's true, as has been said, Scotland is a really beautiful place. Having said that, of course, it's colder than down south, but there are many gardeners on this forum who live in Scotland.

I believe it's always tough, coming home from one job (any job - not just gardening) and turning round to do another 'job' - however enjoyable or otherwise that is. I can only say, as others have done, go for stuff that will give results ('easy to grow') and enjoy the sight of veg making its way up - to me, the leaves, flowers and fruits of veg are just as attractive as growing flowers. And the bonus is that you can eat them at the end.

Don't take on too much - do as much as you can and enjoy the results.
