I have just tried the pet-friendly, ferric phosphate, slug pellets, about 10 days ago. I am making my own slug soup to breed my own nematodes, but it needed 2 weeks to 'brew'. In the meantime, I had to do something.....I too was collecting 100's of the barstewards a night....

The ferric phosphate pellets had very mixed reviews on t'internet, most people thought they were worse than useless, but I have to report massive success, and I still haven't applied my nematode concoction :-)
After about 3 days many of the pellets had disappeared, and I was sceptical as to what had happened to them, I didn't really think the slugs had scoffed them, but I dutifully re-applied the pellets and did a little test. I found a few slugs heading for my seedlings and so dropped a pellet or 2 near the slugs, and wow, they veered at a rate of knots (for a slug :-) ), away from the seedling and towards the pellet, started rasping (or what ever they do ) straight away.

I haven't seen a slug for days now and some of the pellets from the 2nd application are still there, (the pellets survive the rain, so I don't have to keep re-applying after every downpour. In fact, according to stuff I read on t'internet, they work better when they are damp as they release more scent to the slugs).

And my 2 very nosy, scoff-anything' dogs haven't shown the slightest interest, even after watching me put the pellets down.'

I think they are called 'Slug Death XL', and were 4.99 or 2 for 8 pounds in my local garden centre, a billy-bargin, as my plot is quite big and I've only used just over 1 tub. (It said to apply sparingly and I did resist the temptation to go mad with the scattering ).

And I think any that don't get eaten by slugs get broken down harmlessly into the soil.

I replaced many of my seedlings after using these pellets and so far, so good, I still have seedlings and they are getting bigger by the day :-)

Has anyone got any good info about how dangerous the ferric phosphate ones are to slow worms?
I've got slow worms on my plot, and I'd really like to encourage them as they're awesome, but I also have a rather impressive amount of slug, and lots of shredded slimy plants...

A quick update on the progress of the Nemaslug I put down on Sunday night.

I had my usual furtle round the garden at dusk tonight looking for slugs and snails.

I found quite a few, which disappointed me at first, until I noticed that the majority were not moving much (even for snails) and had some kind of greenish fizz coming out of them.

I am assuming that the ooze was the result of the nematodes, but either way they were pretty much incapacitated.

I will keep an eye out for more, fresh damage in the morning and report again

They did that when I salted them last night: I got 1055 of them

My brew has another 10 days to go, I can't wait to get it on the ground

                Hi Hamamelis, do these help?

I think 'sluggo" is an American version of a ferric phosphate slug killer, my local garden centre claimed they couldn't get it for me, but the one they had, Slug Death XL has worked very well in my garden....so far :-)

After emptying the better part of a large tub of organic pellets over the garden, I seem to have slowed the slug advance. My runner beans are finally being allowed to grow and a very kind freegler (freecycler to some of you) gave me a courgette plant to replace the massacred ones and i've put it in my mini greenhouse. I figure that way it'll be protected from the crap weather and I might actually get to harvest something. This year has been AWFUL for growing! If it wasn't the slugs demolishing everything it's the weather. This evening I'll go out with a torch and see about killing some more the old-fashioned way.

Unfortunately it looks like my experiment with nematodes has failed.

I found a few rather large snails trying to scale the outside of my pop bottle cloches last night, and this morning I found two slugs on the ouside of one of my potato growing sacks - one was nearly four inches long!

As these two areas were where I concentrated the majority of the nematodes the only conclusion I can come to is that the large amount of rain we had last week (5 inches in 12 hours) has either diluted the nematodes to such an extent that they are no longer effective, or simply washed them away.

I am still on my nightly patrols followed up by another each morning, but I have noticed the number of slugs slowly increasing again. I am going to try coffee grounds next.

I hope I can come up with a workable solution that is both organic and low maintenance before I get my allotment (9 days and counting ) becauls it will be a bit harder to just pop out for a few mins at dusk as the allotment is a couple of miles away.

Well, I've lost a load of veg this year to slugs, so have gone out and bought some nemaslug. the organic blue pellets aren't working for me this year, and judging by my non-organic plot neighbour, his hedgehog killing pellets aren't working either, and surprisingly they have more damage than me (karma?).

Snails aren't so much of a problem for me on the plot, so I'll report back with my progress with it.

I was going to try the slug gone stuff too, but having read a few posts about it killing (rotting) seedling stems, I'll try this first then perhaps back that up with larger plants + slug gone (the wool pellets).

Next year, I'm definitely holding off planting my module/pot grown plants until they're much larger.
