I put on nemaslug about two months ago, and it proved pretty effective. I added a second dose over the weekend but that was a bit out of dated according tothe packet - about 4 days so we shall see. I may try the "home brew" method - there should be plenty of nemotody slug around to seed the brew, and Mater and Miss Loudbarker can help collect.

Tales of 1000 slug per evening collections are making me go weak - it's astonishing we ever succeed in growing anything with this number around.

I have also found the XL brand "organic" pellets quite effective, but couldn't find any this year. Nemotodes are better, but pretty expensive, especially if you have something larger than my hankerchief patch.

They soon grow... until one fine day you open your back door and a whole army of eyes stares and you in unison and utters, " RIBBET moma, we have returned home, across roadworks, next door's dog and chavdom to humble pond - show us to your slug problem!

Although a friend has a different idea... he reckoned if I kissed them they would turn into princes. I replied they were possibly men who were useless in the garden that were more helpful as the frogs I'd turned them into by kissing them? LOL

I absolutely adore them and wouldn't be without them.. frogs that is.. not men!

Just been to open up the greenhouse and found that the Harlequin Tatties in tub looked like green lace curtains and alive with tiny white slugs. I spent 20 mins picking em off and squashing em. I must have killed over a hundred of the greedy critters. I have never had then eating tattie tops before.

Can we blame this on the weather do you think? That's my normal approach at the moment - that or blaming my poor OH who seems to do all sorts of things wrong that he's not even aware he'd been involved in *evil grin *. I pulled up my shallots yesterday - bit small still, but all falling open with lots of yellow leaves etc etc, and I found dozens of tiny little slugs in their roots and sometimes just under the outer layer of skin... I didn't know slugs even liked shallots?? It's definitely a weird year.

Yep, it certainly is a weird year all right. My onions have been almost decimated by slugs - they might have had a little go at them in previous years, but this year it's really serious damage, I can't see them coming to anything.

I've got batch two of my home-made nematodes ready to go, so must get on to that pronto. It did work, but I foolishly left too much of a gap between applications, and the slimy critters have gone in and bulldozed their way through all my carrots (tell a lie, there was one left yesterday - one!). They've also had my very first courgette.

What with them and the weather, this is certainly a testing year for gardeners!

I didn't read it in a paper but I heard about it today form one of the old chaps on the lottie. Doesn't sound good if slug pellets don't kill them!!
