Is that an 18" dia or the length of the basket? If it's diameter then you may get away with 3 but otherwise I'd only go for 2 plants, they can get quite big and you want them to have enough room to spread.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Serenity, I'd have a go at sowing some more. I sowed 6 Tigerella seeds in a heated propagator on 12/04 & 5 of them were up after about 4 days (think the other went to Australia!). They are coming along O.K. & I don't think you're too late either.

I have also sown tigerella and they have not yet germinated. Sowed some moneymaker and tumbling toms and they came up about 3 days ago.

Does anyone know how many tumbling toms i would need to plant in an 18" basket? I intend to have these growing along the fences.
If it helps I have put 3 in a 14" basket. Not sure how big they get though, so may have to rethink. First attenpt at toms in a hanging basket, so playing it by ear.

I grew a tumbler last year in a 12 inch pot. It took up the whole pot and spilt over the edges. I am growing them too this year, some pots and some hanging baskets but will only be putting 1 plant per basket with a couple of french marigolds to deter aphids

I put tumblers in hanging baskets too - with parsley, I like the idea of marigolds as well Serenity, might try & squeeze one in!

I wouldn't go for more than one tumbling tomato in a hanging basket, personally. I think it would be better - in terms of water and nutrient resources - to fill in any initial spare room with flowers (lobelia, etc). My experience with baskets and tomatoes (balcony red and yellow and tumbler) is that they are tricky to water and make the basket very unbalanced. I found it too much hassle, to be honest. I am no expert with baskets, though, I confess!!

the only problem with marigolds is that the slugs LOVE them (they have had a good go at my jolly jester last night which were in the green house )

hopefully they will not be able to reach the hanging baskets
