Mangetout vs regular peas - DING DING

So do you have a preference? I grew both this year for the first time. Oregon Sugar Snap and Hurst Greenshaft.
I have to say I'm going to keep sowing the mangetout throughout the year as much as I can and probably never sow regular peas again.
The mangetout were so much sweeter, quicker to crop, heavier cropping and less hastle in general. You can eat them raw off the plant, there's no shelling and they even cook quicker. Was reading up and because you are eating them pod and all they are more nutricious and have more vitamin C. Also, you can get a pack of frozen peas for next to nothing in the supermarket whereas Mangetout are very expensive.
It's no brainer for me. Am I missing something about the humble garden pea?

Sounds good to me. We love snow peas (mangetout) here - they never get cooked, we usually eat the container of them while dinner is cooking!
We've got some in hanging baskets on the deck under the clear poly sections of the roof. Just flowering now so we'll see. Glad to hear yours are going great guns as I do like peas, but the kids all adore snow peas.

Yes, mangetout over peas because I hate wasting the pods (and No thanks, not peapod wine). Any veg that maximises yield is for me - so eat the pea shoots, pods and peas. Same with broadies, eat them young and eat the pods. Or beetroot, eat the young leaves and the root. I could go on.....

You should, sounds like a sticky 'The plants that just keep giving' Thanks. I never ate the shoots before. So would you grow a few just for shoots or take some shoots off and then let the plants grow on for pods too? Would taking shoots off not reduce the yield?

i've always grown peas, but the shelling and maggots are a pain and peas are so cheap and easy in the shops, that i wasn't going to bother this year .... but the missus has never grown them, so we tried .... but the mice and weather seem to have beaten us ....
we've sown a bit of mangetout .... it's not brilliant, but better than nothing ....

next year will be maybe a few of each, but i'd rather use the space for french beans / runners etc ... stuff that costs more in the shops and produces a lot more ....

I'm growing both Telephone and Purple podded peas for the first time this year pods are about 1inch long so hopefully I wont have to wait to long for my first harvest.

This year I bought a packet of Leo dried peas and sowed them in pots in the GH through the winter, just kept picking the shoots. Then, when the weather warmed up I left them to flower and I ate the small pods whole. I'm now eating them as shelled peas, raw!! Perhaps not the nicest of peas for that so next year I'll try more expensive pea seeds!!
Here they are on 6th May.

well i prefer peas for the yield you get off of them, but i like the mange tout.

Both but there's nothing like shelling a pod and eating sweet peas (not the flowers) raw.

I'm an equal opportunity pea addict. I've got mangetout, regular peas, and sugar snaps. Just wish they would grow a bit faster - this thread is killing me!!! Maybe I should start some for pea shoots just for the instant(ish) gratification.

Oh I nearly forgot - I bought a sprouter so I could grow something to put on sandwiches - and there's snow pea sprouts starting to shoot - will see how they go - love all the sprouts.

just noticed the first purple mange tout forming on my plants, first year growing the purple ones and hoping the flavour stacks up... i don;t have enought room in my veg patch for them to be for decorative purposes only!

Sneak in a couple of mt peas when you sow, they look identical

Both have their plus points; I like the Goldesweet Mangetout and Victorian Podded Peas and am currently picking from both grown under fleece to keep the pea moth oot!
