  • Peppers

My pepper plants now have peppers on but they're still in quite small pots (I know, I know). The question is, should I cut the peppers and move them on, or nurse them along in the small pots. Some others are covered in flowers. Should I move them or leave them.

Last year i repotted mine into final positioon when smaller than that and were fine. Assume they are 3-4" pots. Only just sowed mine a couple weeks ago so long way behind

If the roots are filling their present pots, then pot them on into a larger size. Try leaving the fruit on, but be prepared for them to drop of their own accord.

          Wow Alice!

So that is what mine will look like! Mine (seeds kindly donated by yourself ) are about half the size, and I had been wondering if I needed to put into a bigger pot yet. Judging by yours and how healthy they are I am ok for the mo. They have already been transplanted once to new pots that look about the size you have now.

Just to say thank you for posting photo and giving me inspiration

Hi Alice, I've sown numerous pepper plants this year and the one's in your photo look similiar to mine when they were in 5" pots. I'm experimenting with them to see what works best and have potted on a few into 9" pots (once the roots were poking through bottom of 5") and they have thrived. I've still got some in 5" but they are getting taller rather than bushier so the conclusion I've drawn is to pot them on. It's all very well putting them into bigger pots but it's finding the large saucers which is frustrating. Has anyone got any good ideas about alternatives (cheap) to saucers please? Good luck with your peppers Alice, they look very healthy, I'm sure they'll go from strength to strength.

                Hi Alice,
Mine are about the same height and i have them growing in 7 inch pots. Have potted them on when in bud and it did'nt affect them at all.

Thanks everybody. There's no roots poking out the bottom so for the mean time I might just let them be as they look to be doing fine.
Shelle, I'm sure your peppers will come fine in their own time. Just wait and see.

Hi Alice, Maybe i'm missing the point here but it shouldn't make any differance what size pot they are in as long as they can be kept continually moist and fed a little. Excessive pots just cause the compost to sour. If you can't keep up- pot them on! I like to put old size pot into new one, fill up, water then remove inner pot leaving perfect hole. I never tease out roots etc just let roots go out in seach of the moisture. Why should that cause fruit drop?- that would be because they were allowed to dry out.

You can but try Marion. With your location and the fact that you have a tunnel your season should just extend enough for you to get a reasonable crop.
