Spuds in bags - another question sorry

Hi Guys

I've read the posts about potatoes with interest.
Mibe are planted in those potato planter bags. I earthed them up bit by bit as the foliage grew and the bags are full.

I have some earlies - salad type (cant remember which variety) and some Duke of York.
I've had a feel about just below the surface and I've found one or 2 quail egg size spuds but also lots of roots with teeny tiny potatoes attached (mm's accross).
My question is this - If this is what I'm finding at the top of the bag, will the spuds towards the bottom be larger?

Yes Sarah the main crop of spuds will be toward the bottom around where the seed was planted.

The others will grow if you leave them but then I suppose you are wanting to have a bit of a feast.

If you mean Red Duke Of York these are a first early and would usually be ready to harvest in 12 to 13 weeks.

Thanks Colin - I have no open flowers on any of them yet so thats whats confusing me a little.

My Duke of York were whites - does that make a difference?

Flowering isn't a reliable indication of maturity (or anything, really )

I've got some Pink Duke of York in a bag, and the flower buds are forming. When I have a little root about through the hole in the side, I can't find a darn thing close to feeling like a potato.

I was quite late planting, though - 5th May. They'd been "chitting" for a month beforehand.

Planted 5th May it's likely to be end of July before you have anything worthwhile but I'd be inclined to leave em a bit longer. Depends how desperate you are for home-grown spuds!

Sarah the white vareity of Duke of York is also a first early though not thought to be quite as early as the red vareity.

Lukins by my reckoning they have only had about 6 weeks in the ground they will be nowhere near ready.

i have some red duke of york and i pull a couple of plant out and i had 300gr and after 1 week 350gr. they were so small and so good that i'm not bother with a huge yeld.. i think i will leave them a couple of weeks and see what happen...

yer know what - I put some in a spud bag and cant for the life of me remember when !

earthed up and filled the bag gradually to the top as the green shoots came through - its now around a 5ft wide circular mass of green foilage sticking out around 2-3ft out of the bag.

how will I know when they are actually ready ?

I started some more a couple of weeks ago - not even sure what kind htey are if I am honest as I got them off a neighbour.

Yeah, I didn't think so either, have just seen several sources mentioning flowers, so thought it was worth a root around inside the bag.
