I didn't think Raymond's reaction was quite as strong or positive as you are suggesting - he did say that this Japanese tomato was the best of those he tasted, but he only gave it 7 out of 10.

I'm not saying it's not worth a go...

Thanks for the links SBP, will put this variety on my wish list for next year as so far I've already sown (for testing purposes you understand.. )

      Orange Banana
      Garden Peach
      Aunty Madge
      Sub Arctic Plenty
      Garden Pearl
      Yellow Perfection
      Warszawski malinowy
      Tomatillo
Where on earth they will all be planted, nobody knows....

Cutecumber, I am guessing Raymond Blanc's total praise is not that easily achieved, but I was going on his reaction when he tasted the Trifele Tomato, rather than the final score he gave it... still, 7 out of 10 is pretty good I'd say, you have to leave some room for that elusive 'perfect' tomato after all. Did I hear him say the top three choices were ones they would be using in the restaurant - must have passed muster for that surely?

        yes indeed, he's no doubt a fussy-britches!

what I didn't quite get was whether those were the only available tomatoes to him from the garden (at that point), or whether he had requested a certain type to taste for a particular reason. Maybe these were the first time they had grown them or something?

Thamks for all the tomato suggestions everybody BUT I AM NOT BUYING ANY MORE SEEDS.
Have made some notes for next year.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I like the taste of the Spanish semi green beefsteak Tomatoes. I don't think you are allowed to take vegetable matter/seeds out of the country, but a big fat tomato sandwich to eat on the plane will have in it as many seeds as I require!

Variety is according to personal taste. What works for me may not work for you. Growing conditions are all important. Don't give too much water, just enough to keep plants growing well, make sure the supply is constant (ish) i.e. don't flood one minute and leave to dry right out - that way you will get split skins. Leave on the vine to ripen fully - then pick. I do one for me (now) one for the bowl for the kitchen. It's an old one but Gardener's Delight is wonderful straight off the vine - better than Maltesers
