Has anybody tried using garlic solution to control them? I followed a link someone posted on here somewhere recently (sorry I forget who it was), to the results of some research which suggested garlic was hugely effective at controlling slug damage. There's also something in this month's gyo mag about using it. I'm going to give it a go and see if it works - got a big clove stewing in a glass of water at the moment and will dilute it for watering. If anyone knows how many cloves to how much water, or how you apply garlic to brassica roots to protect from cabbage root fly, I'd be ever so grateful...

Thanks all -- I think I might have one more go and maybe experiment with this garlic spray business, but I'm not optimistic. If nothing else, it might stop them going for something else now all the carrots have gone.

They killed my cucumbers (repeatedly!), threatened brassicas and even munched my potato foliage (and who knows what underground). I bought nematodes. I felt only mildly guilty when mid-nematoding my potato bags I discovered I'd directly doused a large slug with nematode laced water.

My carrots and snips (and celeriac and flo fennel) actually drowned in the floods rather than got et, and I've re-sown but not massively optimistic. Over half of the carrot bed is currently under a mulch to attempt to defeat the couch grass, so the remaining 1.5m x 1m has both carrots and parsnips now.

Thanks TS, I love the way you do all the work for us . The recipe sounds pretty much like I made up yesterday, except I didn't bother cooking it.. it stank enough to knock an army out from 5km away even when diluted into the watering can, so I figured it would do like that. However, it was raining at the time I applied it and it's rained ever since, so I'm not holding my breath for results at the moment!
