yellowing courgettes

Im growing 3 varieties of courgette this year one of which is Soleil. I've noticed that the leaves are starting off green then turning yellow on both my plants of this variety although other than that they seem pretty healthy. Is this just because they are a courgette that produces yellow fruit? Or is it a cause for concern?

Where are you growing them - in pots or open ground? Could be a feeding/lack of nutrients issue. The leaves should stay green, even with a yellow-fruited variety.

Hi they are in pots, the ones I had in the ground were scoffed by snails! I just wondered with it only being the yellow fruiters that have been affected. Ive got some all green bush and some round ones that I planted up at the same time that are in the same batch of compost (i used compost from a grow bag thats specifically for veg growing) that seem perfectly happy. I 'll try giving them a bit of a feed though and see if that makes a difference. Do you think tomato feed would be the best to try?

Mine seem to be doing this too, mostly my round courgettes, but my butternut squash and cucumbers too, to a lesser extent.

When I've looked it up it seems it could either be under watering, over watering, or lack of nutrients.

Overwatering had seemed most likely, so I tried cutting down, but then the compost in the pots was just getting really dry, to some depth, so then I tried upping the watering, but that didn't seem to help, so I've tried seeding with some seaweed based liquid feed now, which looks like it has cheered them up a little.

I remember a thread about this from last year - lots of people who had grown yellow courgettes (me included) found they had yellow leaves, but were perfectly healthy. I wouldn't worry as long as they look healthy - as Rhona said (waves to Rhona ...) they should have green leaves, but I do wonder whether perhaps the yellow courgettes of today are more likely to have yellow leaves? If they start to look sickly, then perhaps investigate other causes and feed too. Good luck!

If they are in fruit use tomorite other wise use high nitrogen for green growth, I use Miracle Grow for this.

Ah nowhere near producing an actual courgette at the moment. Will give it a bit of Miracle grow. Cheers for the advice

The main opinion here seems to be wind damage though, so a little different. Interesting to read my own post about my miserable courgette situation. Happy to say it's better this year

It is the variety!! Soleil produces yellowy leaves and very ornamental it is too. My Soleil has now set the first courgette and that is in Glasgow!!

So they start green then turn? Thats what mine are doing anyway. Conngratulations on the first courgette by the way - can't wait for mine.

Both my yelow varieties of courgette (soleil and Gold rush) have very leaves yellow this year. I can't eblieve they are short of nutirents: they were planted into a layer of compost and chicken dung pellets and have been dosed with water/seaweed extrract. Nor can I believe they ar eshort of water when it has raied pretty well ontinuously since April. Wind - possibly but they look pretty healthy. Teh defender next to them are doing fine.
