My Florrence Fennel seeds are a bit hit and miss on germination.

Has anyone pre germinated the seeds successfully and if so do you do it on moist tissue like you would for parsnips etc?

    Thanks in advance

I just sow in modules and then prick out from there [sowing several in one module]
I can't see a reason why they wouldn't germinate on tissue in a plastic box. Try it, you've got another month or two [depending on whetehr they'll be outside or in a tunnel] to sow them.

I put them in a heated prop and then put them on once they have some real wispy leaves.

I don't put them in a the propagator as they tend to go leggy, I grow two types, one early supposed to be ready in August(ish) and one for September to November.

I always start them in modules one per module as they are very reliable germinators. Pop on the shelf in the tunnel at temp between 15c to 30c and all is well, transplant to the lottie when about 15-20cm tall.

I've managed to get them to grow from seed sown in modules. I potted them on and put them into the ground on Monday. I'm told they'll run to seed because I was a bit early, so we'll see. I germinated some parsnip in the airing cupboard (third attempt at said veg), planted them up and guess what? Zilch. I'm going to try another half dozen, if they germinate they'll be for THAT dinner, if not I'll have to buy some.

I sowed mine straight into the ground(old seed) and have superb germination. The usual causes of failure are cold, drought and slugs and snails.

There was me rather hoping that the snugs wouldn't like the smell of fennel. Mind you, I thought they didn't like onions but I was wrong.

I went out to water the courgettes in containers and found a slug about 5" long attempting to climb one of the plants. It is now 2 x 2.5" and no longer filling its face.
