Gherkin woes

So, a couple of little gherkins were developing on my plant, but today when I went to check on them they'd gone all soft and yellow. They were only about 1 cm long still.

Am I doing anything wrong? They had started growing when the plant was still inside, so probably weren't pollinated, could that be the problem? Or could it be the change of environment after taking them out? (I had hardened off in a mini greenhouse) Too much/little food/water? Something else?

It's my first year growing veg, and these were looking like the most easy and trouble free plant so far, despite me expecting them to be one of the hardest.

Just take them off and I'm sure you'll get some green ones along soon. I always get a couple of yellow duds to start. The key is to keep whipping the gherkins because once they start, they don't stop! Get your pickling mixture and jar ready.

Thanks for the replies. On the subject of pickling, any recipes/tips?

There are so many. I add dill seeds to my basic pickling mix. Have a google!
