Picked my first, what I thought were ripe pods, today. They seemed swollen and ready to eat. However, on opening the pods, the peas were tiny! Should I leave them much longer until the pods look like they are going to explode or is it a weather related thing?

The pod seems to swell to allow more room for the peas to get bigger. You can give them a gentle squeeeze to feel what's inside or if there's any sunshine hold them up to it and you can see the shape of the peas inside

No!..... I don't pick it, I just hold the pod away from the stem so it's in the sunlight
If the peas look too small I leave it to grow on............Last edited by Thelma Sanders; 04-07-2012, 08:40 PM.

I find the pods always look ready before they really are and that as already said the best way is to gently squeeze them.

i fund peas a bit wierd for me. the pods have 2 or 3 peas inside and some only 1... is that normal with this weather?i think is because i plant them so many and i forgot to thin them out... i have some more sown and they already look better and tall. will see.

This has been my best year ever for peas: so many! All of a sudden like: last week there were half a dozen ready, yesterday I filled a carrier bag.
I'm teaching the school kids to recognise when to pick: when the pods are really fat, not when they're skinny or just slim. They just want to pick them all NOW, they don't want to wait a week for better onesAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
