Runner Beans

Hello i'm wondering if anyone can help i have lost one crop of runner beans and now i have done some more but they not doing well either is anyone els having trouble with there beans

Sorry Thelma, but (touching wood) my beans are one of the few things that are thriving in my garden. They've reached the top of the poles and there are many flowers. I didn't get any beans at all last year, which is the reason I'm touching wood. As I'm also in Sheffield, it can't really be the weather Woodsy, so did you sow direct, grow from modules, have the snugs done for them? More info please.

^^^^ me too, beans to the top of the poles and flower buds showing, both shop bought (Scarlet Emperor bought reduced from wilko at end of last season) and my own saved SE and White Lady. Put them to sprout on damp kitchen roll 16th May, planted them out 19th May.

The lower leaves are rather slug nibbled, and some had their growing tips eaten but have regrown from side shoots.

I always sow, and plant over a couple of months and some of my first plants are in flower... BUT.... Climbing French beans are a dead loss this year and dont want to grow above slug height.

Sorry, but yes! it can be the weather that's the problem............I've never failed with runner beans before this year.
I raised some in modules planted them out -they struggled and went yellow, they were so unhappy. I then did another sowing in modules, same thing happened. Even tried a different variety direct a few weeks ago, they are just not happy.
Green beans in the garden (much more sheltered) are a lot happier.

No-one on our site has happy runner beans this year, so I'ts not just me!

I'm happy for all of you that have runners though, of course

Mine on the lotty have yellowed too. I gave mine a sprinkling of BFB last night. The ones in my poly by contrast are at the top of the canes and are lush and green. They were sown and planted six weeks later than the lotty ones. Think the rain is just killing off everything.

My Scarlet Emperor and Seberian pole beans are doing well but the dwarf French are getting munched by slugs all 3 were started off in loo rolls around the same time.

Same problem here, despite several sowings my runners aren't germinating and the only 2 that have are frozen at about 6 inches tall and at the mercy of the slugs.

However after a few attempts I've finally got Dwarf French Beans aplenty poking their heads through, just need them to get growing upwards away from the dreaded slugs.

runner have only just started to grow very stunted growth for me 3 rd lot of french beans and ive sadly reduced to slug pellets there is only so many i will sacrifice
though ive never been able to grow peas ive managed 3 plants but for me thats an acheivement hehe

Although I do have a couple of beans surviving - it's nowhere near the few hundred that I would normally have.

It is the weather I'm afraid. Cold and windy here at the beginning of June and pretty much all month. It didn't help. Most people's runners round here are struggling. The slugs nipping off the tops doesn't help either. If you're growing in a garden it's bound to be more sheltered than an allotment, especially our windy plot, which does make a lot of difference I think.

Totally yellow and eaten, the wind has also taken it's toll on both runners and frenchies. Not sure if they'll pull through or not, i suppose i'd better plant some more for backup. I may get a crop for Autumn.

Most of my first lot of Climbing Frenchies (pot sown) were eaten by slugs/snails, when planted out, of the couple that survived they're incredibly spindley.

I've got more plants, French and Runners in pots to go out when they get big enough to survive enemy attack.

Had difficulties germinating all beans this year, Runners were worst, had to do those in kitchen towel in the boiler room.

I'm hoping for an Indian summer with all my veg this year.
