  • What can I sow for winter?

Hi just wondering what crops I could sow now that would be ready for Christmas or anything past September.

I'm growing winter radish this year, for something a little different!

I've got parsnips, leeks, spinach, chard and Kale already in ground, then around the end of August I sow Arctic king and 'all year round' lettuce some are under a cloche with the rest in the greenhouse border once the toms have finished.

Various oriental brassicas (Komatsuna, Mizuna, Mibuna, Pak Choi, Choy Sum, Chinese Cabbage, etc.) seem happiest planted around now, and some carry on producing over winter (especially if you can provide cover).

I out in a real seeds order today for winter radish, mizuna, broccoli raab, dragon's tongue and early Paris white onion for overwintering - never tried any of them before!

most traditional "winter veggies" would need to have been started off earler but I expect you can get some cauliflower / PSB / leeks etc plugs from garden centres etc. But this year the weather has been so poor everything seems to be behind anyway. I'd give beetroot, perpetual spinach and chard a go. I intend to plant up an ex-garlic bed with some pak choi.

This winter I tried: Cabbage red and green (green eaten by moths, red doing ok but not hearting up wel) radish.........whoa those things can grow! Miini globe carrots, did really well. Two leeks came up! The lone beetroot is awesome. Some Pak choi is doing really well. The red mignonette lettuce isn't doing well....but that may be due to the cabbage that they are growing with. Apparently they don't like each other and I didn't realise it.

Also coriander, american land cress and rocket. Check out Charles Dowding's book How to Grow Winter Vegetables.
I bought it after umming and arring for ages and it's hugely satisfying, easy to read and worth every penny.
