pants sown leeks wrong it seems

cheated bought some shop leek seedlings ( were on offer ) and well planted them did plant them i feel deep,, but i nosed around plots and just read few threads on here,


should i dig them up again to do the plop and drop water leave thing or just leave as they are now, planted them on saturaday last week

If they only have been in the ground since Saturday i.e. 5 days, it won't be a problem if you start over but plop and drop isn't the be all and end all method of planting leeks. Provided they got a good water in they will be fine as they are and even if they didn't, because of the recent rainy spell they should be fine anyway.

You can just mound up soil round them if that helps.

Zaz- that's what my neighbour always does. He was amused at our little holes for each leek!

I've always planted my leeks 'wrong' for various reasons, and they still grow fine - they just don't have as much white as I'd like. So this year I've just dragged a bit of soil up around the stems, which apparently is why you plant them deep? To blanche the ends? But again I don't know how high up it's meant to go or anything! Plus I'm sure I'm just going to end up with yet more soil between the leaves than I usually get... It's so fiddly getting rid of the soil once it gets between the layers - I'm sure there's a better way of doing things.... So personally I'd not bother to move my leeks, I'd either put up with small white bottoms instead of big ones (we should take bets on who comes up with a comment on that), or earth them up once someone tells us how to do it properly .

thanks i think i will just mount up then this year and nose other people as see how much of a differance it makes

The other method I've seen mentioned somewhere is to slit a loo roll and then wrap it round the stem before earthing up to avoid so much soil getting between the leaves. I've never tried it but it sounds like it could work.

Like the sound of that Incy. I've actually got some pencil size leeks from seed waiting for the potatoes to come out which is quite an achievement for me, I usually forget about them.

Old kid in next plot to me put 12" lengths of drainpipe round his last year, they grew so fat, they actually split the plastic pie right down the middle...........

It's my first year planting leeks - I module sowed them with 2-3 per module (with the intention of thinning but forgot). Modules tended to fall apart as I planted them out - so some went into holes with bare roots, some went in as a group in a plug planted deep, some went in as a group in a plug without changing soil height. I read all the methods but it all went to pot when actually planting them! They all seem happy though and a bit of mulch as we go on could add a bit of blanching. I always eat the green bits of leeks anyway. All tastes the same in a pie.
