Chicken poo

A friend has given me a large bag of chicken poo. I do intent to put it on one of my beds for some cabbages later on either this or early next year. It seems to be quite well rotted already( she keeps it in a large dustbin). How long does it take to rot down I've heard that it contains quite a high level of amonia....

Chicken muck is quite fiery with a high nitrogen content, I would personally mix it through my compost heap to improve the quality of my home made compost for next year.

I keep a few chickens, and I agree with AP - I always put the poo on the compost heap before using it on the garden. Is it mixed with straw or wood shavings or anything, or is it just 'neat'? Mine's always mixed, so I don't really know how long it would take to rot down on its own. But if you definitely want to use it quickly, I'd mix it with something else first to kind of dilute it a bit, and spread it fairly thin.

Mine takes around a year to be unrecognisable, so I'd say it takes at least a year odd to rot down properly. Mine is either mixed with straw, newspaper or shavings.

Definatly don't put it on neat, whatever you do , found out the hard way and nuked some courgettes a few years back.
