  • What next?

Im in abit of a quandry about what to do with my little veg beds next!
At the moment I have stuff that needs to come out. Spinach that has gone over, radishes that have very pretty flowers but not much else going for them, red onions that have been flattened by the rain and a couple of red cabbages that have swamped the 3ft x 4ft beds!
The question is do I try to put in another summer crop or go straight to winter ones??
Most things will have to go straight into the beds as I dont have enough room to grow things on and transplant later. I want to try corn salad and perpetual spinach for winter but could I get some turnips or spring onions in before?
(also how late can I grow beetroot as its by far my fav GYO crop!?)

Midwinter here kentishgal and I just pulled the lone beetroot this week. Was very healthy looking and a decent size.
I have a leek or two just keeping on as well. Think the cabbages will just take off first bit of sun we get. And i pulled two stray carrots (small globe ones) that had hidden under the radishes.
I have some pak choi that is doing well. The corn salad .........well it's there and it's green but it's so small it doesn't seem worthwhile to me. Had some red mignonette lettuce but it didn't last.

With the promised improvement in weather, you still have time to sow beetroot and spring onions..go for it

Maybe you could plant your winter stuff with a bit of fast growing summery stuff in between as catch crops? Must admit, I'm concentrating on winter things now - in case I have to make several sowings like I did for summer! Must allow plenty of time!

I also love beetroot and make sowings up to the end of July. You could also sow a fast maturing carrot like early Nantes or Amsterdam forcing. If you have the winter crops in modules you can just pot them on and allow them to grow a bit more before planting out.
