  • Every cloud has...

    ...a silver lining.
I covered my sprouts and kale with environmesh way back before the cabbage whites were about, but the strong winds pulled out the tent pegs and despite me then burying it all round, the damage was done, the blighters got in.
However, in between the brassicas I planted martock beans that had been holed by the bean weevils a couple of years back. The idea was to cut them down as a mulch. Well due to a period of ill health, the beans got taller and flowered before I could cut them down, but the mesh meant they didn't have access to pollen from other varieties, so I'm now going to let them mature and dry, then I'll have pure seed for using/swapping.
Sadly the green sprouts ran to seed already, although the purple ones might make it. Very large snails have also come calling. We didn't meet up last year, I think it was too dry. The cabbage are not looking good, I think the compost heap might be the best use for them
I did try getting some plants from the garden centre, but didn't see any point planting cabbage and cauliflower that were already flowering in their modules.

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

My late father always used to say "when one door closes, another one slams shut in your face." also "you can take a horse to water but a pencil must be lead (led)!"

lol I told the farrier that altho the saying was 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink' A horse has nothing on 'Putting a baby to the breast and trying to make it drink!' As a midwife I can relate very much to the latter. So many babies seem to love to lie there with their little mouths clamped shut in the first few days.
