  • The Joys and Pins of an allotment

    Hello fellow diggers,
The good lady and self [well mostly the good lady] have worked hard since Feb.by digging, weeding planting and bringing on seedlings etc..The past three weeks we have picked the best peas ever, whereas others on the allotment have not been too successful. Again our broad beans have been excellent. The corgettes were a disaster due to the rain as were the rows of carrots and parsnips for the same reason.
The shallots and onions [my dept.] I have lifted today and are first class. However my potatoes ,although very tasty have again been attacked by the infernal wire worm.
There doesn`t seem to be any way of cleaning the soil of these beggars...............Unless you know something that others know not.
Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks!

Soil off spuds? I've got a big flat brush just for scrubbing them - and it's got a pointy bit which you can use for any eyes.

Go for eelworm resistant spuds when choosing them.

This site gives some information about resistant varieties and some information about crop rotation- Factsheet about potato pests and diseases
A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows
