  • Is it too late?...

Hello again - hope everyone is well!

It's been a bit of a wash out up here (like most places I think), but cold too, and lots of things haven't done too well!

I'm wondering if it's worth sowing another lot of things (living in hope of an Indian summer - ha!). I'm near Glasgow, and was thinking about the following:

    peas (Kelvedon wonder)
    beetroot (Boltardy)
    chard (original lot have bolted!)
French beans (never got round to sowing them!)
    leeks?
    calabrese
    kale
various cabbages (I have spring cabbage which I know you sow around this time anyway, but was wondering if I could sow the winter ones that you normally sow in Apr/May, or will there not be enough time for them to heart up?)

I also lost my winter squash, but think it would be pointless sowing them again as not enough time for them to grow & ripen before the frosts

What do you think - worth a punt or should I just save my seeds for next year?

    Thanks!

    Go for it.
What's the worst that can happen?

Nip to the garden centre and see if they have anything in available to plant now. Get slug pellets.

I reckon you'll get away with peas, french beans and kale (late crops, obvs). Probably too late for leeks from seed. Beetroot worth a gamble, but be prepared for disappointment. Not sure about calabrese and chard...

Not too late. I sowed some french beans and chard at the weekend after I cleared out some tired lettuce. The beans are already up! Just sow them now and see what happens. I often forget things and sow late and don't have failures.

You should get away with planting tundra cabbage (a hearty winter cabbage) as well.

            Thanks everyone!

I have Tundra, so I'll give it a go and see what happens! I'll let you know how I get on!

Most of my gardening books say you can plant french beans and chard and beetroot and stuff right up to midsummer - and since summer's only really just started (and looks like it might finish again at the end of this week!) I'm going to plant loads of things and keep my fingers crossed! As people say, what's the worst that can happen? I'm even going to try some kale since the slugs have decimated my Red Russian completely, even though it's 'officially' too late. I've decided it's better to plant as many seeds as possible rather than try to keep them, because then I have a really good excuse to buy more next year and try new things . Besides, if the world's going to end on 20th December, what have we got to lose..?
