  • Asparagus woes......

I planted 9 Guelph Millenium asparagus crowns back in 2008 in my veg garden. They were 2 year old crowns and I was figuring that by now I'd be having wonderful crops each year. However, the crops have been terrible. This year I haven't even harvested any. The few which did raise their heads (and they all came at different times) were so pitiful that I just left them. 2011 I think my husband and I had a couple each

Is it because asparagus just doesn't like cold, wet, weather (I live in Northumberland, where we are lucky to get a couple of sunny days per month with no rain or wind) or is there a trick to growing it? I religiously keep the bed weed free, and every autumn after the ferns die down I cut them back and muck the bed.

I'm now thinking of just getting rid of the asparagus bed, because at least I'll be able to use the bed for something which will grow. My other thought is to start growing them in bags and keeping the bags inside of my polytunnel. However, I've read that the crowns will need replacing every 3 years if I do that, and if you aren't meant to pull a full harvest for a year or so then it doesn't sound as though it will be economical! I don't have the room inside of my polytunnel to have a permanent asparagus bed.

Sorry for my ramblings, but I'm just wanting other people's thoughts before I give up on my asparagus bed. All help appreciated.

How disappointing for you . I only planted my asparagus last year so haven't harvested anything yet, but I'd definitely be expecting to be picking it by year 3... How far apart have you got them? What's your soil like - does it get waterlogged? They do like it well drained. I'd read up about its preferred growing conditions and see how closely you're matching them... try BBC - Gardening - Gardening Guides - Techniques - Growing asparagus as a starting point. If all else fails, I wonder if a different variety might work better? Good luck.

I had one meal this year from a 5 year old bed, last year was much better. It's been rubbish this season.
