I have some seed left and just wondering what i could expect from these if I sowed now? Packet says to sow April to June, but if they went till November or so surely I'd get a decent return, no?
Thanks
Sowing dates are very much for guidance and tend to err on the side of caution as far as end dates go, I've always found. You might not get exhibition quality vegetables and one year in every four or five the weather will dictate that it all ends in tears but most of the time, as you say, you'll get a reasonable return from something like late-sown carrots. They aren't particularly day-length sensitive, so provided they have enough moisture to germinate (not a problem this year, I'd venture) they'll probably produce some usable burt small specimens. The seed is really no cost at all, so there is nothing to lose from having a go.
Go for it redser, I do. I'll be mixing together all my left over carrot seed this weekend as I always do at this time of year and sowing it. Nothing ventured ..
i've pulled autumn king carrots quite late in the year .... carrots here always seem to take twice as long as the packets suggest .... it's worth a go, even if all you get is baby carrots ....
They'll germinate quickly but you're likely to only get baby carrots as they're a main crop variety that need a decent length of growing season. If you have any you'd do better with an early type which are also good for late sowing as they're quicker to mature. I've tried sowing at this time of year in the past and haven't found it very worthwhile but if you have the space and seeds then I suppose it's worth a try although I'd be more likely to save the seeds for next spring and sow them then.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
