I should be harvesting my first outdoor tomatoes in the next day or 2. My Cherokee purple has two rather large tomatoes that are just about ripe - despite being the sorriest looking tomato plant I've ever seen, Just how its managed to produce these beautiful big tomatoes I will never know!

        Thanks Jeanied,
They are indeed yours. I am impressed with their performance and was going to contact you to see if you had any ideas as to what they might be. They're very tasty and have done better in terms of development than any other variety I sowed at the same time. I'll check whether they are potato leaved to confirm if they are Matinas.

I have sliced up some Kenilworth King George, tossed them around some mozzarella, basil leaves, a little salt and olive oil. They were delish! My Irish Gardeners Delight from RS are poor and nowhere near as good as my usual Gardeners Delight that I have grown for donkeys. In fact I'd go so far as to say they are the size of marrowfat peas

Have had Gardeners Delight which are in greenhouse... very tasty!!
Also some Trailing Garden Pearl grown in greenhouse...taste nice but not spectacular..
And some Tumbler Red grown outdoors under covered canopy...Nice taste..
Outdoors nothing yet but looks like Totem will be first to ripen..

Mine are all outdoors. I had a single Tumbler in June (hidden in centre of plant) with a steady harvest from mid-July.

My cordon tomatoes are only starting to ripen now with Tigarella moving the quickest... I should harvest mt first today. HOORAY.

I'm still getting more toms from my spare outdoor plants than those I've got in the GH. really strange.

Alacante (bit tasteless) are the highest producers up to yet followed by some nice Gardeners Delight, then a few from Garden pearl.

I'm still waiting for the following to ripen:-
                  Lemon tree.
                  Black cherry,
                  Amish or
                  Shirleys
                  Location....East Midlands.

I've had quite a few from a Tumbler, not amazing taste and 3 from a Garden Pearl which were really disappointing. They were ripe but just bland, I was thinking of growing Tumbler again next year as they seem very easy to do and fairly convenient for pots and small spaces but not sure now I've tasted them!

I've been picking Golden Gem (like Sungold, but less likely to split) for a few weeks now. After a weekend away there are loads ready to pick.

Lots of 100s and 1000s, but they are eaten in situ: too tiny to be worthwhile taking the 6ft into the kitchen.

Roma: the plants have been a pain (not enough room for them) but they've ripened in the last week (sometimes only one fruit per plant though, due to small pots)

Amish Paste: massive plants, massive fruits, all still green

NB: everything sown the same time and in the same way

All of my plants are outside (apart from two on the windowsill which are still too small to be out on their own yet)

I have had a single yellow cherry tom from an unknown bush variety about two weeks ago which was incredibly juicy and tasty - there is another just about to come ripe and I also have a very vivid red cherry tom on another unknown cordon plant.

Lots of other tomato plants with either green fruit or still at the flowering stage.

If I remember I will post a pic of the two fruiters to see if anyone can identify the variety as I would love to grow the yellow bush one again.

I know I can save seed myself, but I don't want to rely on it as I have never tried it before and don't want to depend upon not messing it up first time around.

It's the easiest thing in the world: next ripe one you get, squish the seeds out onto a piece of kitchen towel. Let it dry, then pop it into an envelope until sowing time (Feb-Mar).

For sowing, just tear the kitchen towel into pieces and plant each piece

I took 3 of the biggest tomato off my Shirley a few weeks back & put them on the windowsill in the porch to ripen, which they did (took about 2 weeks though).

Noticed this evening that the Shirley in the GH are still green but there is a hint of colour in the one plant that I upgraded to the conservatory Fingers crossed!!
