Never heard of this problem myself until this year, when a relative insisted that their home grown tomatoes tasted absolutely awful. I was a bit sceptical as I'm used to home grown toms being just the best taste ever. The only way to find out was to go and see and have a taste. The plants looked healthy, with plenty of small to average sized fruits, with no apparent evidence of any disease. However....I've never tasted any toms quite as bitter, almost ammonial and with an almost slimy texture.. I'm reluctant to say what variety they are because I dont want to put anyone off unnecessarily, and I'm sure it's not a characteristic of the variety and I must add that I grew the same variety this year in my own greenhouse and they were just as I had expected, sweet, firm, tangy etc and will be sticking with them next year. The obvious question is what went wrong with their toms to make them so inedible. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know what's up?

A couple of guesses, acid soil, low potash content in the soil, lack of sunlight to produce the sugars required for taste.

No, not Gartenperle, but another popular variety that I've never had problems with before.
