Hi guys. I have recently started growing some bonsai from tree cuttings. Can anyone give me some general advice on how to look after them and what other trees I could use.
I'm no expert but dabble with trees in trays. They will dry out very quickly if neglected so watering and feeding is key. Other than that, you need a lot of patience. Every spring the roots should be cut back by a third and fresh compost added. You won't see much from a cutting for about 10 years at least. The trunk takes some time to thicken up so that it looks like an old but small tree.
Some trees are better than others, acers are good as the leaves miniaturise well.
I've got Chinese elm which likes to be kept moist all year round and to be outside during the summer. My dad has been trying to bonsai an oak tree, which after 5+ years (probably closer to 10) is starting to take shape.
