  • planting out tumbler toms

I have 8 plants doing well by a large window. However, 2 of them are now starting to develop their first flower trusses. Are they growing too well ? Is it too early to think about planting them out ? Are they destined to fail due to their fast progress ?? Seeds were planted at the end of Feb.

this is ower first time as well we have had ours out in the green houes for a few weeks now and we have 7 small green toms on them
I know we are risking it but we needed the space.
well we did start planting early think it might have been Jan
and we have more that need to go out
I think Mrs D thinks you have to plant all the seeds this year
and then you can buy some more next year

      Hello Ginger,
I'm growing tumblers too. Each day I take them out of the greenhouse to harden them off and put them back at the end of the day. I was waiting for them to get nice and established roots before I was going to transplant them. The more experienced grapes will be along later and have some tips for you.

I would have thought February was a bit early to sow tomato plants to grow eventually outside. They are obviously now ready to be put into their permanent quarters (hanging baskets or large pots I presume). Do you have room under cover to plant them up and then harden off by putting outside during the day and bringing back under cover at night for a week or two?

hmm.. not sure. The hanging baskets they will be going into are a bit large. I could put them into large peat pots - would that serve the purpose ?
6 of the 8 are not ready yet - so I may just lose 2.
When is the earliest they could go out ?

What size pots are they in now, Gingerneil? You may be able to get away with moving them into one larger pot size before you put them into the baskets.

Good point, I think I might have started my outdoor toms a bit too early (12th March) with the greenhouse ones- its bigger pots I guess. Given it's been set fair with no rain for weeks here and i've been bringing them out for a couple of weeks already(no flowers yet) - when do you think I might risk it?

I'm growing'sub artic plenty' this year and they said to sow feb. They are now getting to tall for my mini-greenhouse, so today I have put them on shelving of old mini-greenhouse and I'm draping fleece over the top at night. They are supposed to with stand some cold.I didn't start my 'garten pearle' till last month, and they are still fairly small. So I think depends what seed pk says,as to whether or not started to early!(I think we all tempted to start growing early!)

I am in the same situation. Will someone please say when it is safe to plant them out in the open ground. Don't worry, if they die from a late frost i won't blame anyone but myself for starting too early. Some of mine have two trusses of blossom on at the moment. Started them off in mid Feb.

I planted 4 out last night... fingers crossed. Another 2 went into large pots and will stay in the plastic growhouse, the final 2 have stayed in 5" pots and will remain in the ktchen for now.
All bases covered I think ! and if they all die, I'll pop down the local nursery and buy some more... but always in the knowledge that they are adopted!

It is reccommended for late May for outdoors.
I am growing tumblers for the first time this year in hanging baskets. Can anyone tell me how many would i plant in a 18" basket?

I would say only one - my experience is that it is difficult to keep them well watered even with only one plant. They can become quite large. If you really need to (as in, there's nowhere else for them to go!) put in two - it also might help balance the basket. Try and resist any more, though.

I do my tumblers in pots now and they're going in to their final place this weekend. First flowers are open and they're ready to go!

I have several cordon toms in grow bags against a south facing wall and have been covering them at night with a plastic 'tent'. I am now going away for 3 nights but can't decide wether to leave them covered or uncovered. Day time temps might be quite high (20c) and night times low (5-8c). Any advice? I have beefsteak, alicante and red pear.
