I am growing a very similar variety called Safari SBP. You can sow them outside from late April till early June or in pots inside from April. If you sow a few in a container they should self support being a dwarf variety.
Mine were sown 1 week ago in pots and will be planted out in another 2-3 weeks in double rows with 6-8" between plants.
Thanks guys. What sort of harvest (quantity-wise) could I expect from a 'plastic recycling box' worth? And how long from planting to picking? What do you fill your containers with compost-wise? (Questions, questions, questions!)
Sowing, planting out and harvesting times should be on your seed packet SPB. If they're home saved seed I would advise you to check out Dr Hessayon's vegetable expert books. Excellent reference book, if a little dated. They give conditions needed for successful germination and how long this should take, viability of stored seed, sowing dates and harvest dates, and expected yield per plant or row length.
I've got several plantings of these growing away. But the early planted HSL seeds got themselves munched by the marauding mice and only have a few left so planted them up in pots yesterday to harvest the beans for seeds next year.
I'm still putting seeds in and they seem to be growing away so why not, something we do here until mid May, containers and ground.
