  • Growing in a greenhouse over winter

As the title says really lol
We were going to get a small greenhouse for next summer but am starting to wonder whether to get one now and if there's anything that we can grow, in pots, in a greenhouse over winter.
The plot we're going to put it on would get some decent sun from early morning until mid/early afternoon.

I presume you won't be heating it so my suggestions would be:

    winter salads, garlic, broad beans.

I usually use mine to overwinter container plants such as a peach and fig. I have started off broad beans but find that they get to leggy and it's best to sow them in early spring.

The best use I find is to be able to sow seeds a little bit earlier and get the seedlings established before planting out. The only plants I direct sow are carrots, parsnips, garlic and onion sets.

Oriental greens grow quite well through the cold weather - pakchoi, mustard, komatsuna that kind of thing. I love stirfry greens

i grew winter gem lettuce in an unheated greenhouse with no insultation .... i have a heater now, will be growing all sorts, all in pots .... i'm not sure how hardy my brassicas will be, but will have some under a cloche outside and some in the greenhouse and will leave others to take a chance in the frost and snow ....

I did potted garlic last year with some success and potted brassica's with success the year before. This year I'll do both plus I may have a go at potted japanese onions (Troy) Is till have a few leeks to transplant and i may even bung some in the bedsoil when the toms come out.

Basically you can grow anything inddoors that will grow outdoors......but better!

I get a more or less twelve month supply of lettuce and spring onions from containers in the greenhouse. Not very exciting I know but anything fresh to bung in a sarnie in January is welcome.
